Pirates of Penzance | Produced by G&S Cape Town, 2026
When director Darryl Spijkers came to us for Pirates of Penzance, the brief was clear: vintage and on a budget. Authentic period footlights were out of reach — so we designed and built something that captured the spirit of them without the price tag or the sourcing headache.
The seashell footlights were designed in CAD and 3D-printed by York Froon, hand-finished, and mounted on custom timber bases with integrated lighting built in from the ground up. The units were wired for DMX control, allowing them to be operated directly from the main lighting console and fully integrated into the show’s lighting design — fading, shifting, and responding in real time alongside every other element on stage.
Golden shells. Warm light. The sea. A solution that didn’t exist until someone made it — and that looks like it was always meant to be there.
Photography and documentation in progress — installation images to follow.
