About

verlig (ver·lig) | Afrikaans

1. To illuminate. Light doesn’t just fill a room — it changes it.

2. To relieve. The weight lifted. The detail managed.

3. Enlightened. Open. Progressive. Unafraid to build what doesn’t exist yet.

Let’s do something amazing together.

Hema

Creative Director & Producer

Hema’s path into lighting began with a temporary job at a lighting supplier and fuelled by a passion for both architecture and performing arts — a combination that turned out to be the perfect foundation for a career spent making spaces and stages come alive.

A qualified interior designer and lighting engineer by training, Hema has spent over a decade working across theatre, live events, and custom fabrication. Her production credits span some of Cape Town’s most prestigious venues, including multiple seasons at Artscape Opera House, Artscape Arena, and Artscape Theatre, as well as The Star Theatre and The Masque Theatre. She has worked as a lighting designer, SFX specialist, stage manager, and original writer — sometimes all on the same production.

In 2024, Hema was included as one of 65 female lighting designers featured in Collected Light Volume Three: Women in Entertainment Lighting, published by Light Collective — a global recognition of her contribution to the field.

Hema founded Verlig Events to bring that same creative depth to live events, private productions, and bespoke fabrication — building things that don’t exist off a shelf, for clients who want something genuinely different.

Chris

Musical Director & Producer

Chris has been playing piano since the age of seven, and in the decades since, has built a career that spans classical performance, musical theatre, original composition, and event production.

Classically trained to ABRSM Grade 8, Chris has continued his studies under award-winning concert pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins. His performance career has taken him from intimate recital venues to the Artscape Theatre, where he served as assistant musical director for Legally Blonde — the Musical in 2024. He has been musical director or pianist for numerous productions including works by Sondheim, Gilbert & Sullivan, and original revues, earning CATA nominations and awards along the way.

As a composer, Chris has written four original works for solo piano — his Fantasy series — performed publicly as part of Verlig Events’ own concert productions. His musical range extends from the Romantic masters he loves most to the full breadth of musical theatre.

At Verlig, Chris is the physical backbone of every event — managing logistics, setup, and breakdown — while bringing his musical expertise to productions that call for it.
