An afternoon of piano and voice at one of Cape Town’s most intimate concert venues. Time with the Viennese Masters brought together baritone Barend van der Westhuizen and pianist Chris Cameron-Dow for a programme celebrating the enduring genius of Beethoven and Schubert — two composers whose work continues to define the emotional vocabulary of Western classical music.
The programme opened with Beethoven’s song cycle An die ferne Geliebte — the first significant song cycle in Western classical music — before moving through the dramatic Pathétique sonata, a Liszt transcription of Schubert’s Ständchen, and a selection of Schubert Lieder including the visceral Erlkönig. The afternoon closed with the world premiere of Fantasy No. 3, an original work for solo piano by Cameron-Dow — one of four compositions in his ongoing series for piano.
Verlig Events produced and managed the full event: venue coordination, ticketing via Webtickets, catering liaison, programme design and print, and videography coordination. The show was recorded for online release by Tony Mittelmeyer Productions.
Barend van der Westhuizen holds MMus and BMusHons degrees cum laude from Stellenbosch University and has performed with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gauteng Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tinta Barocca Orchestra, among others. Chris Cameron-Dow is a pianist, musical director, and composer based in Cape Town, most recently assistant musical director for Legally Blonde — the Musical at the Artscape Theatre.
